What is "The Videog"?

The Videog is a vlog series I'm doing over the summer, both as a way to keep working on my video skills and to share certain aspects of my life.

Shot entirely on a iPod touch. Edited on Adobe Premier Pro.

There are two possible meanings for the name:
1. it's a different take on the word "vlog" (which also stands for "video log").
2. it's a take on the term "photog" which, for some reason, is used to describe videographers - despite the fact that photography implies still images, while videography is concerned with the moving image.

Anyway, enjoy! MC

Episode 15 - The Bourbon Rickey

Episode 15 hopefully teaches you how to make a Bourbon Rickey.  This drink has its roots in DC and is a personal favorite.  Unfortunately, not many bartenders know how to make it - yet it's insanely simple to make!!!  Thanks to my boy here at the Lucky Brewgrille for making this particular Rickey.

The Rickey family of drinks is made with three simple ingredients: spirits (in this case, Bourbon whiskey), club soda, and lime juice.  To make this, you fill your ice-filled glass halfway with spirit, add a dash of lime juice, and top with club soda.  Garnish with lime.

And always remember: "Don't eat the garnish."

Episode 14 - Mormon Holy Land

Episode 14 is a tour of the Greater Temple Lot in Independence, the holiest place in the Latter-day Saint (Mormon) movement.  This is where Joseph Smith said the Garden of Eden was located, and where Jesus will make his Second Coming.

When you hear Elder Price in "The Book of Mormon" musical sing about "the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri," this is where he's talking about.

Currently, this place is home to a number of LDS and LDS offshoot buildings, most notably the Community of Christ (formerly RLDS) Temple and Auditorium; the Stone Church (a CofC building); the Church of Christ (Temple Lot); an LDS Visitors Center and meetinghouse; and the UN Peace Plaza.

Unlike LDS Temples, the Independence Temple (with the silver spiraling roof) is open to the public.  I took the tour a few years ago, and was really impressed.

There is an LDS Temple in the Greater Kansas City area, but it's not in Independence.  It just opened (for Mormons with valid temple recommends only) in the Northland, near Liberty.

Episode 13 - Brian Does Karaoke

Episode 13 features Brian Boye singing Journey's "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" during a karaoke night.  He references the fact that I gave a rather energetic rendition of this song a few months earlier.

Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the song.  Nor am I planning to make any money on The Videog series.

One last thing: I'm sick of everyone mispronouncing the work "karaoke": it's not "care-ee-oh-key", it's "kah-rah-OH-kay."  It's the same "kara-" (meaning "empty") you see in "karate."

Episode 12 - Liberty Memorial

Episode 12 is a trip to the Liberty Memorial and the WWI Museum at Penn Valley Park.  Shot the same day as Episode 4.

Episode 11 - .TOD Conversion

Episode 11 features the long and tedious process of converting the .TOD files from my JVC Everio HD camera to a format I can edit with.  In this particular case, I'm converting files for "Unfiltered," a One Night Stand film I shot and edited a few days earlier, to as close to HD .MOV files as I can.  The conversion process takes hours (you heard me) to complete.

You can see the latest version of Unfiltered at:

Episode 10 - The Young Dems

Episode 10 features the June meeting of the Kansas City Young Democrats.  Yes, we were meeting in a bar, and yes, it really was very, very loud.  Note to KCYD leaders: let's try quieter venues for our meetings.

Episode 9 - Second Saturday

Episode 9 puts to bed a misconception present in the KC media: that Kansas Democrats don't exist. They do, and this is proof: the Johnson County Democratic Party's monthly Second Saturday breakfast. This particular Second Saturday was devoted to the upcoming elections and redistricting, which the federal courts literally finished 36 hours before this was shot.
